Video to Animated GIF & WebP Optimizer
Convert MP4, MOV, and WebM video clips into palette-optimized Animated GIFs or multi-frame Animated WebP files locally in your browser with trim, dimension, FPS, and looping controls.
Method and assumptions
Video frames within the selected [start, end] window are decoded sequentially at the target frame rate (FPS) and dimensions using Mediabunny's CanvasSink. For Animated GIF (.gif), each frame is quantized to an adaptive RGB565 palette (32–256 colors) and LZW-compressed via gifenc with optional Netscape 2.0 loop headers. For Animated WebP (.webp), each frame is encoded via the browser's WebP encoder and muxed into an RFC 9649 Extended WebP container (RIFF + WEBP + VP8X + ANIM + ANMF chunks).
Common mistakes and edge cases
High resolutions and high frame rates increase GIF file size rapidly; lowering FPS to 10–12, reducing palette size to 128/64 colors, or choosing Animated WebP significantly reduces output bytes.
How to use
- Drop an MP4, MOV, or WebM video into the workspace (or load the 2-second sample clip).
- Choose Animated GIF (.gif) or Animated WebP (.webp) and select a dimension preset or custom Width/Height.
- Set your Start/End trim window, Frame rate (FPS), palette color count (32–256) or WebP quality, and loop toggle.
- Click Export, compare the side-by-side preview and file-size savings, and click Download.
Example
Load a 2-second clip, select 480×270 at 10 FPS with 256 colors (or Animated WebP at 80% quality), and export a looping 20-frame animation.
Frequently asked questions
- How does Animated WebP differ from Animated GIF?
- Animated GIF is limited to a 256-color palette per frame, whereas Animated WebP supports full 24-bit RGB with lossy/lossless compression inside an RFC 9649 RIFF/VP8X/ANIM/ANMF container—often producing sharper animations at smaller file sizes.
- How can I make my GIF file size smaller?
- Lower the frame rate to 8–10 FPS, reduce dimensions (e.g., 480×270), or select a 128-color or 64-color palette.
