Method and assumptions

Each target page's MediaBox is read via pdf-lib and inset by the specified top, right, bottom, and left percentages to compute new [x, y, width, height] rectangle coordinates, which are written to both CropBox and MediaBox.

Common mistakes and edge cases

Updating CropBox and MediaBox changes the visible and printable viewport boundary without deleting off-page vector/text operators from the underlying PDF stream. Do not rely on PDF page cropping to permanently redact confidential text.

How to use

  1. Drop a PDF file into the workspace (or load the 3-page sample PDF).
  2. Choose a quick margin preset or enter custom Top, Bottom, Left, and Right inset percentages.
  3. Select whether to apply the crop to All pages or a specific page while inspecting the live emerald crop boundary.
  4. Click Apply crop & update PDF and download the cropped document.

Example

Select the 'Trim Header/Footer (8%)' preset on a 612×792 pt report: top and bottom insets of 8% reduce page height to 665 pt, removing running headers and footers from the visible page box.

Frequently asked questions

Does PDF cropping permanently erase hidden content?
No. Cropping updates the PDF CropBox and MediaBox viewport boundaries so viewers and printers only show the cropped area, but off-box vector/text objects remain in the file stream. Do not use cropping for security redaction.
Does cropping reduce text sharpness?
No. Modifying page box coordinates is a purely structural vector operation with zero re-encoding or quality loss.
